How the FIFA World Cup Points Table Works
The 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage uses a standard points system: three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero for a loss. Teams are ranked within each group by points first, then by goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded), then by total goals scored, then by head-to-head results, and finally by drawing of lots if still level.
The top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance to the Round of 32. The eight best third-placed teams from across all groups also qualify for the knockouts — giving 32 teams a place in the elimination bracket.
