How the 2026 Bracket Works
After the 12-group group stage, 32 teams advance to the knockout bracket: the top two from each group (24 teams) plus the eight best third-placed teams across all groups. This determines the seeding for the Round of 32.
The knockout bracket is single-elimination. A draw after 90 minutes goes to 30 minutes of extra time. If still level, a penalty shootout decides the winner. There are no away-goals rules or replays — every match ends with a definitive result.
Knockout Rounds
- Round of 32 — 32 teams → 16 advance
- Round of 16 — 16 teams → 8 advance
- Quarter-finals — 8 teams → 4 advance
- Semi-finals — 4 teams → 2 advance
- Third Place Play-off — The two losing semi-finalists
- Final — At MetLife Stadium, New York/NJ
