How European Qualifying Worked

UEFA received an allocation of 16 places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, up from 13 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup — reflecting the tournament's expansion to 48 teams. The European qualifying competition was organised by UEFA and ran across 2024 and into 2025, involving all 55 UEFA member associations.

The main qualifying phase divided European nations into groups of varying sizes. Group winners qualified automatically for the World Cup. Teams finishing second in their groups entered a play-off round for the remaining spots. Nations not able to qualify through the main groups had a further opportunity through the UEFA Nations League play-offs — which created additional paths for nations based on their performance in that competition.
