How Club World Cup Standings Work
The expanded FIFA Club World Cup uses a group stage format with 32 clubs divided into eight groups of four. Clubs earn points using the standard football points system — three for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss. Within each group, the top two clubs after three group matches advance to the knockout Round of 16.
If two or more clubs are level on points after the group stage, they are separated by: goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded within all group matches), then goals scored, then head-to-head results between the tied clubs, then head-to-head goal difference, and ultimately drawing of lots. This system rewards both winning and goal-scoring throughout the group stage.
The knockout stage is single-elimination: Round of 16, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals, and the Final. Unlike the group stage, knockout ties that are level after 90 minutes go to extra time and penalties. There are no replays or away-goal rules.
